Welding plastic uses the same principles as welding metal. With household items, welding can be done easily and effectively. These are some easy tools that can be used to repair broken, cracked or torn plastic.

Only the exact same types of plastic can be welded together. If different types of plastic are used they will not produce a strong joint and will not hold.

Use a level, clean, insulated, well ventilated work area. Since weld temperatures are not extremely high, a sturdy piece of cardboard or ironing board cover can be used to insulate the work surface.

Welding plastic in the simplest terms is melting the edges of plastic and joining them together. There are several different heat sources which can be used to weld plastic. Many of them are already in your home.

A non-stick household iron is an excellent heat source for welding plastic. Prepare the plastic by washing with a soap made to remove grease. Rough the edges of the plastic, unless it is a very thin plastic like the type that would be used for a shower curtain or a garment bag. Make sure the steam setting is off. Set iron on the highest synthetic setting. Melt the edges and fuse together. A piece of wax paper can be put in between the iron and the plastic to keep it from sticking.

A hot plate is also another excellent heat source for plastics welding. Use a hot plate with a non-stick smooth surface. Prepare the plastic by washing and roughing up, melt edges and hold together until fused. Plastic cools very quickly so holding it together work just as well as a vice or clamps.

A simple metal rod can also be used. Heat the metal rod over the flame of your stove and use the end of the rod to melt the plastics’ edges, hold together to fuse. Never allow the plastic to come in direct contact with the flame.

Larger more complex plastic welding is done with a hot air or gas welding gun. Used when welding plastic piping.
